@Steven: I guess almost all stones used for that portal were coming from the Colosseum, as it's the same marble type.

@Laurie: Actually, it's just a pair: the church to the right both consists of the tower and portal (and everything between).

This is indeed a wonderful place, it's full of history and you immediately start thinking about all the people that might have been there in former times.
