Back to Xanten, the fine medieval town in the Lower Rhine region. This is the St Anthony altar in St. Victor's Cathedral. Instead of showing the stages of life of the saint we can see various figures in niches, among them St. Anthony and Mary Magdalene.
Extraordinarily beautiful and intricately made! A lovely image!

@Michael Skorulski: Thanks! The concentration of beautiful altars in this cathedral is indeed extraordinary.
A beautiful work of art. I like the 2 little paintings on left and right.

@jenniellen: My pleasure! Actually I'm making photos of things I'm really interested in (that's why I try to explain what can be seen on most of the images). And I really like to share that with others, because I always get something back that I don't have had before or I didn't know that it would exist :-)
pfew!!, this is has so much detail and is telling such a big story. My screen is too small. Nice light.

@lightwriter: So glad you like it! (Hey - Xanten isn't that far from Holland, come and take a closer look!)
My goodness, the details are amazing! and to think it was crafted so long ago is incredible. Another wonderful capture MS :)

@MaryB: Even more amazing is the sheer number of beatiful altars in that cathedral. And you come very close to them and watch every detail!

@Ronnie 2¢: Thanks, Ronnie, glad you like it!
One of your replies suggests the carving is wood --it's not ivory?
14 Apr 2008 9:56am
@Twelvebit: No, it's all wood. Very small parts might contain some ivory - but that would have been much too costly. The only matter that comes close to ivory are the human bones you can see in the socket :-)
