Remember Sant'Ignazio? A few weeks ago we were looking at one of the virtual portals: this is the opposite side.
This is wonderful MS, it's like were looking up into heaven. What a simply beautiful painting.

@MaryB: I have still one ceiling left in stock that is even more breathtaking! :-)
WOW!

Unbelievable artistry. The whole idea of the gateway to heaven gives me the chills, as I don't like to think about death. However, this makes me feel a whole lot better about the idea!

@Tracey: Actually this isn't about death but about the epiphanic realization of Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. What you can see here (have a look at the whole painting) is Ignatius' commission to proselytize the world, symbolized by allegoric figures in the corners of the painting who represent the then known continents. So you can see a very explicit claim to power expressed with traditional means of art that people of then were able to read. So it's more of a political statement but an metaphysic depiction of death and resurrection. (In the complete picture you can see that Jesus is in the center of the painting but that all attention is drawn to that man who's emitting rays of light - Ignatius. An intriguing demonstration of self-confidence and power!)
Extraordinary three dimensional, especially considering the fact that it's already been rendered one degree flatter by a photograph.
