Since today is Good Friday in the Orthodox Church we use this as an opportunity to visit St. Kunibert again and have a look at the nave's ambulatories.
I like the beautiful simplicity of this church.

@Michael Skorulski: Yes, it has a very pure Romanesque style. It was consecrated just one year before construction of the Cologne Cathdral began (1247) and has been built at the zenith of that architecture.
Oh I like that. A great feeling of height.

@Margie: Maybe that's an indication of early Gothic influence. The city of Neuss (nearby Düsseldorf) has a Romanesque church that anticipates the architecture of cathedrals, a very unusual architecture, then.
Wonderful architecture, simple but beautiful. I saw a fantastic program on the TV the other night about how the Cathedrals of England were designed and built, from the Normans to present day restoration, it was absolutely fascinating.

@MaryB: Especially English Gothic (especially the late one) is a treasure I still have to discover!
A great wide shot from top to bottom. Amazing that the church has still retained its beauty given its age. The interior is very simplistic in nature without much adornments.

@Steven: Great parts were destroyed during WWII, reconstruction persisted to the 1990s. Here I've written some more info and you'll find aditional links.
Nice shot... a touch underexposed though!!!

@Kaddy: I don't know - usually the light in churches reaches from dark to mellow. It would be simple to brighten the photo a little bit up but that wouldn't match the impression of light I had there. So I didn't any post processing here :-)
Enormous height.

@Observing: For a Romanesque church - yes. It's quite an impressive sight when you approach Cologne by train, rolling on the Hohenzollern bridge, looking northwards: it's the biggest landmark on the river Rhine to the north of the cathedral.
It does have a very engaging purity of design and simplicity.
Very nice photo....I like the way you've caught the spirit of the place.

@Ian Bramham: Thank you! Indeed a very pure execution at the zenith of Romanesque architecture. Gothic was already coming through the door.
nice architecture

@Irwansyah Sk3tchw!nd: Absolutely :) Without all the colour and stuff from later centuries it has a very pure and almost 'modern' appearance. I like this church very much.
Some of it looks so new --was this part of the post-war restoration.

@Twelvebit: This is almost a new building, the original church was heavily destroyed in the war. Its reconstruction was discussed controversally, because the original Romanesque church from the 13th century experienced many modifications through the times. These modifications were eventually omitted in the reconstruction and the church had been rebuilt as it was meant to be.
Great shot, I like this a lot.
