Questioner: Aaaah, yes, very interesting! So what do we see here?
MadScientist: First, Germans don't dress too elegantly during the weekend (this is a shot from Saturday).
Questioner: Oh!
MadScientist: Second, they don't keep their old churches clean, except this bright corner.
Questioner: Oh?
MadScientist: Yes, this is a corner of Cologne Cathedral. For decades this part of the facade was just a patchwork of brickstones, toilsomely concealing remaining damages of WW II. Three years ago the Dombauhütte, the Cathedral Building Lodge of Cologne, successors of the medieval cathedral builders, initiated reconstruction works. And they finally succeeded last year! But as you can see, these newer parts already start turning black like the old parts of the building due to auto emissions.
Questioner: That means...
MadScientist: Two things: the city of Cologne, if not the state of Northrhine-Westphalia should ask themselves why they constantly refuse to clean up the cathedral as the commune of Paris did so a few years ago with theirs. If you look at recent photos of Notre Dame de Paris, you'll see what I mean. Second: lots of people think that they don't build like this anymore. This is obviously wrong, the bright parts you can see here are completely new. It's not the question if they can but if they want to and if they're able to pay for it.
Questioner: Ah!
A grand image and a great dialogue.

@Michael Skorulski: Sometimes it's time to speak up. ;-)
Yes very strange this bright part with dark all around. A new concept... :-)) It's a pitty because it's a great architecture and it will be better if it was cleaned (as Notre dame recently, it's superb like that !!)

@Evelyne Dubos: You take the words out of my mind. It's a shame to neglect this wonderful cathedral this way. My last visit to Paris was a true eye-opener!
WOW...

@Ekaputra Tupamahu: Like it? ;-)
awesome...grandeur of d architecture is breathtaking:)

@Desparado: A must see if you're traveling to Germany :-)
Cologne Cathedral is magnificent and it could clearly do with being cleaned up, I looked at the link to Notre Dame Paris, wow! what a transformation, I can just imagine how much more spectacular Cologne Cathedral would look given the same treatment.

@MaryB: I think that would be the dream of its medieval architects! :-)
Really a great conversation and shot... I most say that yes, the Cologne Cathedral needs to be clean, however, just a little... Why? It is a very old Cathedral and it should show some signs of its age.
To clean or not to clean... That is the question... I guess the answer lies on the fact of how one sees the Cathedral: As a glorious religious place, as a great piece of architectonic history, or, just as a place which attracts tourists...

@juant3: This is indeed a complex question: the cathedral fits many needs as it is a tourist attraction and a church as well. What annoys me the most is that wishy-washy attitude of the responsible institutions: they attach a scaffold here and there, polish some corners (like the tympanons above the entrants), install a new window (the 'Richter-Fenster', you probably know about this), but to do the obvious, and that means to clean the cathedral and to remove the biggest damages, seems to be impossible. I mean, this is cultural heritage, it's a precious treasure, it deserves love and respect. Why can't we be as smart as the French?
Another one of yours up on my favorite list! The detail takes my breath away, especially since I am reading Pillars of the Earth! Just mind boggling how they can build things like that! Oh, and I just received a postcard (I collect postcards from around the world) from Cologne!

@Tracey: Cologne rocks! Personable people, lots of culture and history, a great botanical garden. In the Middle Ages this city was called the 'Star of the West' (maybe sounds strange in the ears of an American ;-) and even if its fame fades for centuries, there's still enough substance.
Beautiful details!

@Eleftheria!: Wait - there's more to come!
Excellent shot, and interesting dialogue. I think he color of the image is great, it looks very much like an old kodachrome slide.
To clean - no, well at least not spotlessly clean, the grime is part of its history. To maintain - yes, we should never let these magnificent buildings decay, but the cost of repair is often prohibitive.

@Observing: ...very much like an old kodachrome slide. Bingo! You really know the ropes, man! Amazing! Of course I did some processing here to enhance the bright corner. One of my favourite tools is DxO and its cool 'FilmPack' plugin. It's not a kodachrome filter but an emulated 'Fuji Provia 100F' film I used here. Congrats! To clean - you're absolutely right! Of course it will cost a lot of money, but our government wastes a lot of money anyhow, so why not in the refurbishment of our cathedrals? That's a privilege not only the rebuilt Church of Our Lady in Dresden should have :-)
Klasse Fotos und ne gute Story!

@Michael: Danke. Jeder putzt sein Auto, bloß die Kathedralen... nee, muß doch nicht sein... :-)
Great picture and a very engaging commentary. My brother lives in Cologne, now I can pretend I know something when I go visit him!

@drphoto: Then you might be interested in my little cathedral trivia as well :-)
A beautiful church. I needed to put your picture in small and reduce the page to 75% to be able to see all at once. After doing this I could say that it was a good idea to include the people, this gives a feeling of a very high monument. I would suggest a crop on the left to reduce the sky and remove that building on the left to end with a kind of vertical panoramic picture. Not sure if doing first a vertical correction for the left side of the church would be better.

@akarui: Thanks for your suggestions! Actually I didn't intend to make a balanced 'beauty shot' here; Cologne Cathedral is a well-known subject, not to say: it's been photographed to death, so I tried to emphasize just the important part for my story. This corner is always very crowded, so I virtually had no choice to avoid the people. That building in the background is Cologne central station, so you can imagine that bazillions of people are cruising there :-)
I think you're right on the point of wanting to pay for it, that's why modern architecture is so box like and quicker.
25 Jun 2008 8:10pm
@JoeB: Depends. For visibly representative purposes there's always enough money, just have a look at recent building sites in the Gulf of Arabia or China. For companies usually a prestigious address in the letter-head will suffice, they aren't interested in aesthetics. Gothic cathedrals like this one were meant to be a reflection of the heavenly Jerusalem and they were prestigious for their builders as well. It seems that our culture prefers prestigious symbols (the address) than elaborate decor, that's sort of strange because our society is so sticking to vision.
Gorgeous!

@Jen: And huuuge! :-)
Granted, I haven't been to Germany for some time, but last time I was there Germany, though perhaps not as clean as Switzerland, seemed cleaner to me than the US.
26 Jun 2008 2:08pm
@Twelvebit: You were in the South, right? Next time you're here I'll show you the dirty ol' Germany ;-)
Too difficult to clean and maintain.....and who'd give that much money for the lacy accents ?!
28 Jun 2008 10:37am
@Japanalia: Where there's a will there's a way :-) And the money... thinking about our government and the billions it wastes for much nonsense I wouldn't mind if they spent a few millions for the preservation of our monuments...
