I always think these plants belong to a vegetable family, a bit like an artichoke. But it's a fine close-up image all the same.

@Observing: Thanks! I don't think they're edible, they are succulent plants that feel well besides your cacti. :-)

I have to show my ignorance of plants. I was also thinking that its like an artichoke are the leaves when boiled edible? I love artichokes. The detail shows the fatty leaves very well.

@JoeB: I never tried them :-) They are succulent plants and fit well in your succulent bed. But if you're really thirsty you might try to chew the leaves, you shouldn't die from this :-D

Hey, was Echeveria the President of Mexico? I've seen some of these and am always intrigued by those fat sort of waxy leaves.

Echeverias are nice - there are so many types of them :-)

beautiful plant. Did you tried a scare framing that would have emphasised the symmetric side of the picture?

@Laurent: No, it's just a shot 'from the hip' - I only strengthened contrast and light here. These plants grow this way, fortunately :)
