Junkerhaus, Lemgo: Staircase

Posted by MadScientist (Düsseldorf, Germany) on 2 October 2008 in Art & Design.

We're now on the first floor (in American: the second floor) of the Junkerhaus, looking at the staircase. It looks a bit narrow, but there's enough headroom left for secure climbing. You may recognize the skeletal superstructure from the vestibule that extends into the next storey. The staircase continues to the top floor, where Junker installed a small belvedere, or lookout, where you could have a nice view on the city, but unfortunately it is closed. To the left we would find the salon, the room to the right is a guest chamber (there was at least one guest sleeping in this room for a few weeks). The metal rails you can see here are restricting access to the rooms, you can't move freely here in order to protect the house. You might realize a small lantern more or less at face value: this could have been used to hold a lamp or a candle, but it has never been used.
