Pinus pinea

Once plundering the archives, we can stay for another day in Rome. This pine nearby the Baths of Caracalla caught my attention. Background music: Pini di Roma.

@observing: My first guess would be 'date palm', though this glossily scrubbed stem distorts the overall appearance. But I say it's a 'Phoenix dactylifera'. Am I right?

@Ian Bramham: You certainly have, pines are a very large conifer genus. :-)

@MaryB: For me this kind of tree is somewhat synonymous to 'mediterranean'.

That is an interesting pine tree. The needles look like they could be as much as a foot long from this image. Is that so or is it that the sense of scale makes it seem so?

@Laurie: Scratch, scratch... it's a while ago, but the needles were quite long, about 10 cm (4 in) I think. These trees develop sort of an umbrella form with their foliage, something I don't see too often at home. One day, we found a big cone, it's still a gem in our glass cabinet. :-)

An interesting looking pine you have found and captured. Unusually-shaped, the branches look like they are knotted.

@Steven: I'm also surprised how different they look from ours. There are so many pine species (I guess there are several hundreds), some variety is always appreciated. :)

@Twelvebit: Not sure, I didn't try them. Never tasted pine nuts at all...
