Zuiderkerk, AmsterdamPosted by MadScientist (Düsseldorf, Germany) on 7 September 2009 in Cityscape & Urban. (I have to admit that I mistook this church - the Zuiderkerk - for the Oude Kerk and vice versa. If you compare the steeples: they look quite similar. I've changed this in last week's posting accordingly. Sorry!) Zuiderkerk, the first Protestant church of Amsterdam. When Calvinists took over in Amsterdam in 1578, the Roman Catholic churches in the city were confiscated by the Protestant authorities and were made Protestant churches. The church you can see here is the first one built by Protestants and that has no Catholic history. Apart from this church being a building of the 'other' religious party, this church is a powerful monument of an upcoming bourgeoisie. If you are (still or a has-been) member of the middle class: that's the origin, folks! Of course there were Catholic merchants before, but the self-awareness of being a social class of its own was born in cities like Amsterdam and this proud steeple is a witness of this development. Download my coffee-table book of selected postings here. Enjoy!
