@akarui: Thanks, Olivier! Usually the churches survive, the buildings around them don't, so it's very pleasing to have undisturbed cityscapes like this one.

@Tracey: There is a reason for this. Today it's quite rich, but only a few decades ago, Bavaria had a lot of agriculature and almost no industry, so all these cities were untouched while in the industrial regions of Germany every possible step of 'modernization' had been done. While large old towns were teared down in the northwestern parts of Germany due to growing infrastructure and the needs of the industry. While this happened, southeastern Germany held a long sleep. After the decline of Germany's industry and the fall of Germany's old industrial centres, Bavaria awoke from this sleep. With a lot of money it was possible to refurbish these old towns which now were considered precious. That's the reason why south Germany has more jobs, more beautiful cities, and perhaps better weather than the northern part of Germany.

@Twelvebit: Every revival style is - at least in the style patterns it uses - sort of an imitation. You might find it interesting that H. H. Richardson's Trinity Church in Boston (1877; so-called 'Richardsonian Romanesque', the American Neo-Romanesque of the late 19th century) has been a role model for the conservative sacral architecture in Europe up to the 20th century. So you have please a bit more self-confidence with your architects, please! :-)
