Michaelsberg Abbey, Bamberg: The Bishop's EpitaphPosted by MadScientist (Düsseldorf, Germany) on 22 October 2009 in Art & Design. Attached to St. Michael's aisle walls we can find ten very differently designed epitaphs - funerary monuments - of various prince-bishops of Bamberg, dating from the 16th to the 18th century. Their original location was Bamberg cathedral, but when the cathedral was 'purified' from any non-Gothic style, these monuments were moved to Michaelsberg Abbey in 1838. This one is the most elaborate: it's the tomb of prince-bishop Ernst von Mengersdorf (+ 1589 (or 1591?)), done by Hans Werner. It depicts a view into the interior of the temple of Jerusalem, with Jesus teaching the scribes. Thus the high education of the deceased bishop is indicated (his head is resting on books, too), but also aspects of the Counter-Reformation, as one can see in the lateral parts of the epitaph: here craftsmen build a new church, according to the Council of Trent. Download my coffee-table book of selected postings here. Enjoy!
