@Michael: At least the building on the left side - the old town hall - is older. And yes, Leipzig's old town has a high housing density, already in the 19th century you could find six-storey residential buildings.

@Ronnie 2¢: A different era, though the Renaissance town hall was already a palace of the citizenship. But with the exchange something new happened, without doubt.

@dj.tigersprout: Depends - many parts of Germany were completely devastated at that time. Unbelievable that the kings of that time would have had the possibility of banning and arresting market operators, just so. A bit more Baroque would make the sorrowless life of greedy banksters much more interesting. >:-)

@Twelvebit: I think potentates of the past didn't stop that developlment, because they hoped to make money through the merchants. Somebody had to pay for all the palaces and monuments, and taxes too big would cause disturbances. So they let them go...
