Look Ma, No Cars!

Posted by
MadScientist (Düsseldorf, Germany) on 26 February 2009 in Transportation.

a) Been to North Korea yesterday. Boring. Bad weather, no cars.

b) A shot from 1973 when the Saudis drastically reduced their oil output. In consequence of this 'oil shock' driving a car on Sundays was prohibited for some months.

c) Oberkassel Bridge on Rose Monday, when the inner city was closed for car traffic, a real delight for pedestrians.

Pick one! :-)

Sharon from Los Angeles, United States

nice capture

26 Feb 2009 7:47am

@Sharon: Thanks, Sharon! It's not Brooklyn Bridge, though... ;-)

Shanghaisky from Taipei, Taiwan

This is an amazing image. Real delight.

26 Feb 2009 9:37am

@Shanghaisky: Many thanks, Shanghaisky! A rare opportunity to see 'my' bridge without car traffic at daylight.

Laurent from Lyon, France

.... I go for answer "a" ;o)

26 Feb 2009 12:47pm

@Laurent: I'm afraid not! ;-)

Ronnie 2¢ from London, United Kingdom

. . yes, it is my idea of North Korea, too !

26 Feb 2009 2:07pm

@Ronnie 2¢: Buy me a ticket and I'm going to see if you're right!

Jen from Alpharetta, United States

Nice capture...a?

26 Feb 2009 3:54pm

@Jen: Close, but no cigar! :-D

JoeB from Brampton, Canada

The emptiness is amazing, I'll cover myself I choose all of the above. :D

26 Feb 2009 5:09pm

@JoeB: Haha, you're disqualified! >:-)

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

A nice angle from which this was taken where everything converges toward the center. The series of lamp posts does a good job leading the eyes from the foreground to the background.

26 Feb 2009 6:09pm

@Steven: Being able to stand there on an (almost) ordinary Monday was indeed quite exciting, I just had to take this shot from the center!

Batkoï from Salon de Provence, France

yeah lovelly shot

26 Feb 2009 6:31pm

@Batkoï: Many thanks, Batkoï!

Rui from Leiria, Portugal

Hummm... I bet on B... just to b different! ;)

Excellent shot!

26 Feb 2009 7:12pm

@Rui: Close... but no! :-)
Thanks very much, Rui!

vu@granby - Wolfgang from Granby, Québec, Canada

Ich denke "c", Deine Kamera schließt "b" aus und bei "a" wärst du noch im Jet-Lag Coma... :-)

26 Feb 2009 7:13pm

@vu@granby - Wolfgang: Bingo! Perfekt kombiniert! :-D

MaryB from Staffordshire, United Kingdom

I think c too, a great shot MS. To walk along a road bridge with no traffic would be brilliant, I could think of a few I'd like to walk across if there were no traffic :)

26 Feb 2009 11:44pm

@MaryB: Me too! Thanks very much, Mary!

Laurie from New Jersey, United States

I remember the days of gas lines, odd even gas days, and rationing. It was an ugly time.

27 Feb 2009 3:04am

@Laurie: Definitely. Unfortunately we are dependent on oil as we always were - this could happen again quite soon.

WABIKOJA from Shiga, Japan

Really a beautiful b&w picture, great tonal range and rich blacks!

27 Feb 2009 8:54am

@WABIKOJA: A little bit dramatized, it wasn't that rainy then. :-)

Twelvebit from Victoria, United States

I know it's not a) cause the North Korean's don't let people wander around taking photos of bridges. Korea in B&W

27 Feb 2009 9:15pm

@Twelvebit: You have to admit that I came pretty close. :-)

akarui from Kagoshima, Japan

Very graphic and nice composition. I have read the answer...

2 Mar 2009 11:59pm

@akarui: I would have guessed "B" if I didn't know better... :)

Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, France

Yes !! like this one, the perspective, the graphisme, the strong B&W, all is good...

3 Mar 2009 8:27pm

@Evelyne Dubos: To be honest, I didn't expect that much popularity for this shot! Thanks a lot, Evelyne!
