The Quiet City

Posted by
MadScientist (Düsseldorf, Germany) on 17 September 2009 in Cityscape & Urban.

Your typical tourist guide will tell you that Amsterdam is one of these cities that don't go to sleep. Indeed, sleazy pleasures can be found in many streets, but a little bit outside of the rackety quarters you find canal streets like these, where Holland's society circles are residing. Romaing through these streets is rewarding: you can catch a glimpse of other people's lives (no curtains), you can see breathtaking flats, and then you can feel how rich and powerful this city once was and still is.

Ana Lúcia from Leiria, Portugal

Beautiful night shot.

@Ana Lúcia: Thank you!

Ted from South Wales, United Kingdom

beautiful night shot indeed!

17 Sep 2009 7:44am

@Ted: Many thanks, Ted!

akarui from Kagoshima, Japan

Excellent night shot just before the sky is getting all dark.

17 Sep 2009 11:43am

@akarui: And it was a warm night, too! :-)

JoeB from Brampton, Canada

The creeping in of the night, so you went into a Peeping Tom mode at night. :D

17 Sep 2009 12:37pm

@JoeB: Nolens volens! If people don't use curtains, you can't but have a look... :-)

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

A familiar scene I think I've seen once before on your blog. Glad the weather cooperated this time to allow you to capture this great night shot!

17 Sep 2009 12:38pm

@Steven: 'Bad Weather' is my other second name (besides 'White Sky')! You were perhaps thinking of this shot?

Peter from Amsterdam, Netherlands

That's why I love to live in this city, it has a bit of everything in it.
From red light behind the windows to yellowish light on the streets and canals.

17 Sep 2009 1:14pm

@Peter: ...and from high-brow to hedonistic. :-) Cheers, Peter!

MARIANA from Waterloo, Canada

Great night shot .

17 Sep 2009 3:47pm

@MARIANA: Where are these warm nights now?

B.Held from Santa Fe, United States

you truly captured one of the most beautiful and serene night shots! bravo!

17 Sep 2009 6:35pm

@B.Held: I was exhaling very slowly while holding the camera. A situation similar to my church shots, a matter of practice. :-)

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

The city has many eyes (all lit up), even when it sleeps it keep some eyes open! And the sky is also showing here an eye, a rather sleepy one in the far distance. The perspective is beautiful and I'm sure I'd stroll in your steps, leaving the rackety quarters to others.....This shot makes me think VanGogh...because of the lighting and reflections!

18 Sep 2009 6:34am

@Japanalia: You would find much inspiration there, and a Van Gogh museum is just around the corner. :-)

Twelvebit from Victoria, United States

Can a picture be sleazy, or can it merely depict something sleazy?

22 Sep 2009 11:02pm

@Twelvebit: If beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, then sleaziness might so, too. But I don't exactly know.
