Straws for attracting wasps. Seen at Flora, botanical garden, Cologne.

António Pires from Lisbon, Portugal

What's the purpose of attracting the wasps?

23 Apr 2010 8:51am

@António Pires: Some wasp species are rather rare here because of the lack of natural habitats. I think this is a small support. Then it's in the botanical garden and certainly has further educational purposes. I could indeed observe several insects flying around these straw bundles.

. . and is that one doing a fly-by, bottom right ? Love the weirdness of this.

@Ronnie 2¢: Yes, a bee, I think. Weird? Don't want to move in? :-)

MARIANA from Waterloo, Canada

It looks strange and I wanted to ask the same as Antonio .

@MARIANA: A rather small bundle, not much more than you might carry in your hand.

Unusual shot for you : )
Very nice ! I like it !

@☾éline: I'm not completely immune against geometric patterns. :-)

An original material bathed by an attractive light. Good shot

@Ddo: Many thanks, Ddo! Much appreciated!

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

I first thought it was a lot of cinnamon sticks. :-) It makes a great abstract piece and I love the capture of the "fly-by."

@Steven: These straws were arranged with many others on a big panel, visited by many bees and wasps.

Christine Walsh from Astoria, NY, United States

I like that the whole picture is filled with the straws. I'm glad someone is collecting the wasps there - From Antonio's comment above, I think, like here, there are some wild trees that are only pollinated by the wasps. We used to live near a wild fig tree and they would come every summer (and get in our kitchen) and i would kill them until I read up on how only they would pollinate this tree. I stopped killing them and just shuffled them back out.

Why wasps? Wont that be annoying???
Otherwise, cool shot =-)

@Connor Walsh: That's not on my balcony; it's in a botanical garden. :-)
