Notre-Dame du Finistère: High Altar

Posted by
MadScientist (Düsseldorf, Germany) on 20 August 2010 in Art & Design.

The massive marble high altar in Notre-Dame du Finistère. This and the two other altars in this church were executed by A.J. Leclerq in 1853, and although they were added quite late, they fit nicely into this church's interior.

Phil David Alexander Morris from Saskatoon, Canada

Very well framed and unbelievably beautiful.

@Phil David Alexander Morris: There might be more elaborate altars in other churches, but this one is made of massive marble. That golden plate is very beautiful.

B.Held from Santa Fe, United States

how beautiful!

@B.Held: Many thanks, B.!

António Pires from Lisbon, Portugal

Your photo is very good.
As for the church, I feel something unusual, is the classic style that doesn't suit? I don't know.

20 Aug 2010 1:44pm

@António Pires: Maybe because it's not true Baroque but filled with a lot of French 19th century taste. A German church at that time would look totally different.

Christine Walsh from Astoria, NY, United States

Wow, the alter looks great for being "executed" so long ago :)

20 Aug 2010 1:50pm

@Christine Walsh: I was meaning "executed", not "executed". ;-)

Michael from Chester, United Kingdom

The design of the alter is quite heavy but it does project a powerful presence. The glow is captured nicely.

@Michael: If there wouldn't have been this black floor, taking photos there would have been much easier. But the altars were well lit.

Ted from South Wales, United Kingdom

exquisite lighting MS!

@Ted: Thanks a lot, Ted!

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

Great capture with all this detail in gold. A great place to display the monstrance. :-) The placement of the book gives a good sense of scale here and how large the altar is.

21 Aug 2010 1:05am

@Steven: There are probably bigger ones in other churches, but in this special case the illumination plays an important role, too.

Othersideblue from Kerman, Iran

WahuO .. the place and the image both are fascinating !

@Othersideblue: Make yourself at home, you will find plenty of shots like this one here. :-)

Calusarus from St Sorlin en Valloire, France

Very nice details in this shot. I like the shadows too…

21 Aug 2010 4:25am

@Calusarus: What the altar misses in size is added by the light. A subtle design. :-)

MARIANA from Waterloo, Canada

fabulous image , you master :) .

@MARIANA: *blush*

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

It is heavy, it is rich...but it is also a delight to look at! Of course the lighting contributes to the effect, but this shot makes the whole look fabulous!

22 Aug 2010 6:15am

@Japanalia: Exactly, the illumation adds a lot to the mood.
