Dual System

That heatwave last week which was hitting central Europe last week was as welcome as it was challenging. On the one hand everybody enjoys warm and sunny days, especially after that lousy summer we've had this year. On the other hand it was a hard time for a photographer when the selected subject was not directly sunlit. A bright sun at a rather sharp angle made several shots very difficult, even if it was in your back. Super sharp contrasts, shadowy areas rendered in pitch black tones next to overexposed zones, a swamped light meter that often needed manual correction - this image from Altstätter Ring, Prague - gives you an impression. Quite unusual autumn weather!

@Ronnie 2¢: I've taken some rolls with me, will have to develop them still.

Great details!

The photographer photographed, using and exposing for a sunlit area can isolate a subject and the eye can gradually go to something else in the 'dim' background.

@James Read: Thanks for the suggestion, light situations like this make me rummage around in my photo bag for seldom used filters... :-)

@James Read: Thanks for this link to your excellent photography site! (I'm always a bit shy with people photography, especially when I'm having my big DSLR with me. Sometimes too big.)

Ted from South Wales, United Kingdom

@Ted: In many ways! I didn't know there were so much tourists in the city at the end of September!

Phil David Morris 2011 from Saskatoon, New York, Canada

Incredible control, perfection to me of controlling these difficult circumstances,
the lighting is pretty much textbook perfect, all the areas giving good definition.
5*****'s for that job alone, and your perspective is right on the money also.

@Phil David Morris 2011: Many thanks, Phil! Finding the right exposure was really hard sometimes, even my ND grad filter wasn't of much help! That light was sometimes merciless!

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

I like the activity going on in this photo and also the very good quality of the mono! Fantastic control of lighting and a good persepctive.

@Japanalia: There at Altstädter Ring was a chance to capture individuals; at the Charles Bridge it was just too overcrowded!
