Strahov Monastery: Basilica

Posted by
MadScientist (Düsseldorf, Germany) on 15 October 2011 in Architecture.

The three-aisled Basilica of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is a former Romanesque church with a checkered history. Plundered by troops in the Hussite wars, transformed into Gothic style, overhauled, then transformed into Renaissance style, damaged by French cannonade and finally transformed into Baroque style (design: Anselmo Lurago). Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was playing the organ here.

This image is composed of two separate images, because this was the only way to get most of that great ceiling (which depicts various biblical scenes). Shot through a closed gate.

WOW! This is one of your WOW images!!! This is splendid! I'd love to be inside there and hear the organ playing Mozart! Exploring this church should be a pleasure and a challenge to a photographer, so many things to look at and admire!
